Summary: The darkness of winter has passed in Utsunomiya. The flower we see first after the winter is the national flower of Japan, cherry blossoms, which we enjoy in our heart. To commemorate the 110th year of its municipality, the city of Utsunomiya is planning to upgrade Utsunomiya Castle Park. Following the example of the Potomac River in Washington D.C., this project is to plant cherry trees in the park, and aims to provide comfort and relaxation to those who visit the park.
In order to maintain the park as a historical site, the city has provided a budget to preserve the citadel and moat, and to construct a historical museum. However, it was desired that the park have a better quality landscape.
On February 20th, 2005, all nine Rotary Clubs of Greater Utsunomiya city joined together at Utsunomiya Castle Park to plant donated cherry trees and to construct a stone monument in honour of the “Rotary Club Centennial Anniversary” project.
The donation is: the 55 Kawazu Cherry trees・44 Ooyama Cherry trees・5 Weeping Cherry trees
Our honourable guests include: *The Governor of Tochigi Prefecture Tomikazu Fukuda *The Mayor of Utsunomiya Eiichi Satou *”The Resurrection of Utsunomiya Castle” citizens group President Kiyosi Fujii *RID 2550 Governor Hajime Murakami The event was memorialized by Tochigi Prefecture’s newspapers and mass media groups.
Pictures of the ground breaking event and cherry tree planting were distributed to RI.
Quote: " Kawazu Cherry trees bloom in late February every year, which means that we will be able to enjoy cherry blossoms on the day of the Foundation Anniversary of Rotary Club-Miracle of Dearborn Street.”
